Local dentist climb stairways to success
Father and daughter dental team at Berry Lane Dental Surgery, Longridge, are celebrating after becoming the first two dentists in the country to complete the Denplan Stairway Programme.
All dentists in the UK are required to complete professional training and development every year, to keep their clinical methods and patient services up to date. Nick and Fiona Richardson at Berry Lane have gone one step further and become the first to achieve The Stairway Award, which can be used as a stepping stone to further qualifications, such as an MSc in primary care. Their colleague, Phil Brook, is not far behind them.
Nick Richardson could not be more thrilled and commented: “This is a fantastic achievement for the practice and we are really looking forward to sharing the benefits of the Programme with our patients.
“Training and development are crucial in our business and we take it really seriously here at Berry Lane Dental Surgery. To find out that the Denplan Stairway Programme could not only assist us in our training and development, but also help us convert that training into further qualifications was an opportunity too good to miss. To be the first practice in the country to complete the programme is just the cherry on the cake!” |

Denplan Stairways Programme
Denplan have initiated in September 2009 a programme of professional development for dentists, partly leading to a MSc in General Dental Practise in association with Birmingham University.
Nick, Phil and Fiona are engaged in this programme. And at the end of January 2010, Nick and Fiona hope to have completed the Stairways programme. They should be the first two dentists in the country to do so! |

Fiona becomes youngest-ever excel dentist
Fiona Richardson of the berry Lane Dental Practise, Preston, has recently become the youngest-ever dentist to achieve Denplan Excel Accreditation. Qualifying from Dundee Dental School only two years ago, Fiona spent her VT year at a practise in Lytham St. Annes. In August last year she joined her father, Nick Richardson, and Philip Brook at the Berry Lane practise. Here she embraced the practise philosophy of patient care and quality, joining the Denplan VT Plus programme. Passing her MJDF Part 1 last October, she achieved her Excel Accreditation after only five months with the practise. “I was astonished when our Denplan Consultant, Dawn Pringle, confirmed I was the youngest Denplan Excel dentist in the country,” says Fiona. However her colleagues and patients were not surprised at all, as Fiona has rapidly gained a reputation locally for her calm, quality dentistry – so much so that three other practises have recruited her on a part-time basis, and she is now finding that principals are fighting for her services! “I’m really happy to be part of an Excel Accredited practise” says Fiona, :and I think the reflective part of the process is something that would be of use to all young colleagues.” |

Retired dentist, Dr J Howard Wall and his wife, Alma, paid a visit recently to Berry Lane Dental Surgery in Longridge.
Many readers will remember Dr Wall who practiced for 35 years on Garstrang Road in Preston. Preston born and educated, he studied dentistry at Liverpool University before joining his father, also a Preston dentist, in Fylde Road. In 1951, Howard opened his practice in Garstang Road,
running it very successfully with his wife, Alma, until his retirement in 1986. Dr Nick Richardson took over the practice and continued at the same site until the end of 2005 …54 |

years of dental care at no 47 ! In 2006 the practice was relocated to Berry Lane Dental Surgery in Longridge, its current location.
Dr and Mrs Wall are always amazed at the advances in technology and care offered to patients today compared to that available 50 or 60 years ago. They have lived for many years in Knowle Green, and are often seen out and about in Longridge.
